For Halloween enthusiasts, the West Union Library will host a Pumpkin Carving Contest on Tuesday, October 29 at 3:30 p.m. Tweens and teens may join Andrew for some messy fun and cool prizes for whoever carves the best Halloween pumpkin! Also, for those of you who like the Harry Potter books and movies, Manchester Library’s “Hogwarts at the Library” program is every Tuesday of October at 3:30 p.m., and North Adams Library’s “Harry Potter Teens” program will be on Thursday, October 17 at 3:00 p.m. At each of these programs, there will be fun J. K. Rowling-inspired crafts and activities you can do that would bring pride to your Hogwarts house! In addition, the North Adams Library will have a special Halloween Costume Party on Thursday, October 31 at 3:00 p.m., complete with candy, games, and a Spooky Scavenger Hunt for all ages!

In addition to these special October programs, we will continue our regular weekly programs, except for Manchester Library’s Tween Activity Club. Our Preschool Story Times are: Tuesdays at 11:00 a.m. at the North Adams Library, Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. at the Manchester Library, Wednesdays at 11:00 a.m. at the Peebles Library, and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. at the West Union Library. Our programs for older children and tweens are: North Adams Library’s After School Program on Tuesdays at 3:00 p.m., West Union Library’s Tween Activity Club on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m., and Peebles Library’s Tween Activity Club on Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m.

For school children looking to earn Accelerated Reader points, remember that you can search our online catalog by your AR level! Instead of searching our shelves for the corresponding colored AR level sticker, simply look up the available books at your level and find the ones you want to read. Then you can quickly find them on our shelf or place a hold on them, so you can read books you’ll understand and enjoy! You can also search our catalog by Lexile measures instead of Accelerated Reader level.

Library Resource Spotlight: Honor Family History Month this October by taking advantage of our Ancestry -Library Edition. Available only on our library computers, you can search the entirety of Ancestry.com’s over 20 billion historical and genealogical records for free, instead of paying for a subscription, to help build your family tree. This popular genealogy website enables you to search United States Census records from 1790 to 1940. In addition, you can search through millions of military and immigration records, to discover where your ancestors were from and what they did. It also includes birth, marriage, and death certificates you can search through, as well as church records. Ancestry Library also has newspapers and city directories, and public member trees that you can browse to find partial or complete family trees of your relatives. You can even search their collection of photographs and illustrations to match a name to the face!

All Adams County Public Libraries are open from 10:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and from 10:00 a.m. till 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Visit us online at adamscolibrary.org.
