Educators and electronic project enthusiasts from Southern Ohio are joining together to create face shields for health care workers that provide lifesaving service during the COVID-19 outbreak.
According to Josh Montgomery, a professor at Southern State Community College, thirty-two 3D printer operators are using around eighty-five 3D printers to create pieces that will be used to manufacture over 1000 face shields that will be used to protect those who are providing care to the public.
Montgomery told the Informer that the project started after educators realized that many 3D printers were sitting idle as schools and campuses were closed. “There are a lot of 3D printers that are sitting in schools and there are a lot of teachers that aren’t doing a lot. What if we got them to take the printers home or to be allowed to go back into their schools to 3D print,” said Montgomery.
After posting to social media asking for help and gaining massive support, Montgomery realized that he needed to create a centralized place for communications, so he created the Facebook page called, Southern Ohio Makers Against COVID Coalition.
The 1000 or more mask manufactured this week at Southern State Community College in a sterile environment. Once the face shields are completed, they will be donated to local health facilities based on need.

To give an example of costs, one roll of filament can print 20 to 25 masks and a roll of filament costs $25 to $50 depending on materials.
