Efforts are underway to restore the historic Kirker Covered Bridge in Adams County following damage from a tornado that struck the area in April 2024.
The Adams County Travel & Visitors Bureau, in partnership with Adams County Economic & Community Development and the Adams County Commissioners, has established a special fund to support repairs to the bridge, which was built in the 1890s and spans Eagle Creek along State Route 136. It is one of only two remaining covered bridges in the county.
An EF1 tornado caused significant damage to the bridge, prompting the need for extensive restoration. Work will include replacing roof trusses and metal roofing, repairing and painting the structure, restoring the stone foundation, replacing wingwalls, and stabilizing deteriorating stone courses. Project costs are currently estimated between $72,000 and $100,000, with additional work possibly needed as repairs progress.
Bids are currently being received for the roofing and foundational work, and community members are being encouraged to contribute to help preserve the historic site.
Named after Ohio’s second governor, Thomas Kirker, the bridge stands near the Kirker homestead, which is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the Underground Railroad network.
