West Union High School’s Performing Arts Department transported audiences “Under the Sea” with their vibrant production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Directed by Dakota Nehus and Carl Schneider, with musical direction by Aaron VanPelt, the production captured the magic and whimsy of the beloved Disney classic, while showcasing the impressive talent of the school’s students and staff. With the show’s dazzling and colorful sets, lively choreography, and outstanding performances.

Leading the cast, Sadie Armstrong captured hearts as Ariel with a stunning rendition of “Part of Your World,” while Samson Strong portrayed a sincere and charming Prince Eric. Lydia Armstrong’s energetic Sebastian had the audience tapping along to “Under the Sea,” and Miley Smith’s villainous Ursula stole the spotlight during “Poor Unfortunate Souls.” King Triton, played by Nathaniel Horsley, delivered a strong and heartfelt performance.
The production showcased a full cast of sailors, mersisters, sea creatures, and even elementary students, creating a true community event. The energy was contagious, and the choreography by Marci Nehus and Jennifer Griffis kept the stage alive with movement and color.
Audience reactions were overwhelmingly positive, with standing ovations each night. “The audience loved it—we all gave a standing ovation,” one attendee shared. Another said, “The show was full of laughter, and little kids loved it.” Director Dakota Nehus noted that the first night sold out completely, with the second night just a few seats shy.

After each performance, families were invited to meet the cast and take photos — a highlight for many young fans. Adding to the festive atmosphere was a full concessions menu, including pizza, pulled pork sandwiches, nachos, and a variety of sweet treats. Show themed T-shirts and 3d fidget toys are also available.
Performances continue May 2 and 3 at 7:00 PM, and May 4 at 3:00 PM. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students. Don’t miss this magical production that proves West Union High School’s stage is truly a place where dreams come to life!
