Get ready for a couple of very exciting programs next month at the Adams County Public Library! Both the North Adams and Peebles Libraries will host author visits with local writers. On Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m., New York Times bestselling author Julie Salamon will have a book signing at the North Adams Library, sponsored by the Friends of the North Adams Library. Julie Salamon, a North Adams High School graduate, celebrates the publishing of her eleventh book, An Innocent Bystander, which delves into the 1985 international terrorist attack of the cruise ship Achille Lauro, which resulted in the brutal death of Leon Klinghoffer, a disabled Jewish-American. There will be copies of the book available for purchase, with proceeds going to the Friends of the North Adams Library to help fund future library programs. The following week, the Peebles Library will also have four local authors visiting on Saturday, November 9, from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Sponsored by the Peebles Magazine Club, come to this event to meet Pollyanna Covert (author of several children’s books, including Sparky Newton and the Missing Pencils), Saundra Crum Akers (suspense writer of more than a dozen books), Brett Crothers (author of The Great Apocalypse novels), and Rick Houser (nonfiction writer, whose latest book is Memories Are from the Heart). Show your hometown support of these local authors by stopping by to celebrate their literary works!
Speaking of books, remember that the Peebles Library’s Adult Book Club, The Bibliophiles, will have their last meeting of the year on Monday, October 21 at 4:00 p.m. to discuss “The House of Leaves” by Mark Z. Danielewski. In this unconventional suspense novel about a young family who moves into a seemingly normal small home that becomes a mysterious vessel of impossibility, you will find vertical footnotes, text written backwards and upside down, multi-colored words, and numerous font changes. Fitting for October, this eerie book will keep you guessing.
Teens and tweens, don’t forget to mark your calendars for West Union Library’s Pumpkin Carving Contest on Tuesday, October 29 at 3:30 p.m. Compete against your peers to make the best Halloween pumpkin and win a prize!
Also, for kids of all ages, the North Adams Library will have a Halloween Costume Party on Thursday, October 31 at 3:00 p.m. Complete with games, candy, and spooky fun, this event is a great way to celebrate the holiday!
Remember, each Adams County Public Library branch has a STEM Saturday every month featuring a different technology. For October, we have the Makey Makey, which connects ordinary objects to the computer, enabling you to use Play-Doh as a game remote control or bananas as a piano! If you missed it at the Peebles and North Adams Libraries, you can still experiment with this technical tool at the Manchester Library on October 19 and West Union Library on October 26 at 10:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
