Everyone age 10 to 18, remember that on Thursday, October 17, the North Adams Library will have a “Harry Potter Teens” program at 3:00 p.m., complete with activities, like a “Horcrux” Hunt, and crafts, like making your own Patronus Picture Frame, inspired by J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. The lucky winners of the games will also receive Harry Potter-themed prizes! To fuel the fun, there will be themed candy and snacks for you to enjoy.
Manchester Library’s special on-going October program this year is the reprise of last years “Hogwarts at the Library!” At each of these programs, on every Tuesday in October at 3:30 p.m., try your hand at completing different J. K. Rowling-themed projects like painting a dragon egg and decorating cookies to match you Hogwarts House. You can also try some of the Hershey’s Kisses Sorting Hats, Twizzlers Magic Wands, and “levitating” lemon drops from the candy cart.
Get ready for our cool October STEM Saturdays! This month we’ll experiment with the Makey Makey, which enables you to connect regular objects to computer programs. Come see how you can use bananas as a piano, or play Mario computer games with play dough! This electronic invention tool will be at the North Adams Library on October 12, Manchester Library on October 19, and West Union Library on October 26. Each STEM Saturday program starts at 10:00 a.m. and lasts until 12:30 p.m., so stop by and witness this technological computer toy.
With the new month, each of your Adams County Public Library branches has new books and DVDs just added to our collections. Some of the new books include A Dog’s Promise by W. Bruce Cameron (the author of the novels that inspired the major motion pictures A Dog’s Purpose, A Dog’s Journey, and A Dog’s Way Home), John Grisham’s The Guardians, and What Happens in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand. Some of our new DVDs this month include Spider-Man: Far From Home, Toy Story 4, and several Hallmark Christmas movies. You can place these items on hold using our online catalog or our SEO Libraries app.
Library Resource Spotlight: If you’re looking for multiple perspectives on an issue, try using the Points of View Reference Center. This EBSCO database provides articles and pictures that present the different sides of numerous issues, helping you develop your own opinion on these topics and making projects like persuasive essays and debates easier and more informed. With each issue contain in this database, you can read an unbiased overview of it, then read articles that delve deeper into the main arguments and counterarguments involved. It even provides critical analysis guides specific to each topic to help you better understand the issue! The database has over 400 controversial issues you can browse by category, including highlighted current issues like police brutality and the legalization of marijuana. The Points of View Reference Center also provides general research guides to help you write your paper, such as how to create an outline.
