West Union educator arrested for sexual contact with a student

A teacher at West Union Jr./Sr. High was arrested over the weekend on May 4th and is currently being held in the Adams County Jail for sexual battery. Laura Ann Welfley, 26, has been a Language Arts teacher at the school. She was also approved by the Adams County/Ohio Valley School Board to coach the high school girls track team.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, Welfley was granted a teaching license that was effective on July 1, 2015. Adams County/Ohio Valley Board of Education meeting minutes show that that the district granted Welfley a two-year contract last year, through 2019.

The teacher was booked into the Adams County Jail on charges of violating section 2907.03 (7) of the Ohio Revised Code that reads: No person shall engage in sexual conduct with another, not the spouse of the offender, when any of the following apply (7) The offender is a teacher, administrator, coach, or other people in authority employed by or serving in a school for which the state board of education prescribes minimum standards pursuant to division (D) of section 3301.07 of the Revised Code, the other person is enrolled in or attends that school and the offender is not enrolled in and does not attend that school.

The Informer has learned from a source at the school that the teacher was having relations with a 17-year old male student. A source close to the investigation reported that there may be a video of the student going into Welfley’s classroom alone for extended periods of time.

The Informer will continue to monitor this story and will have updates as they are available.
